EVERY LIFE MATTERS

OUR MISSION

We exist to rescue, empower, and restore the lives of women and children who are caught in the cycle of commercial sexual exploitation and trafficking through awareness, education and rehabilitation.

Director & Chief Functionary

Deepika is a non-profit organization, established in 2001 to empower women and children caught in the cycle of commercial sexual exploitation and trafficking. Our organization only runs and operates with the support of donors and partners. All donations go toward providing our beneficiaries of these projects with free education, vocational and life-skills training, and psychotherapy. Deepika serves in Sonagachi, the largest red-light district in the city of Kolkata, India, which is home to more than 10,000 prostituted women and girls.

HOW WE BRING CHANGE

Area: Kolkata, West Bengal

We bring change by empowering vulnerable women and children through education, shelter, healthcare, skills training, and support, creating pathways to dignity, independence, and hope.

RESTORING HOPE, FREEDOM & DIGNITY

THE CRISIS WE ADDRESS

Sonagachi, in North Kolkata, is one of Asia's largest red-light districts. For thousands of women, sex work remains the primary means of survival, often driven by poverty, limited education, domestic violence, trafficking, and economic hardship.

Women in the community face multiple challenges, including poverty, stigma, violence, unsafe living conditions, inadequate healthcare, and limited social security. As they age, many are left without financial stability or support. Children growing up in this environment are highly vulnerable to school dropout, child labour, trafficking, and the cycle of exploitation.

Yet Sonagachi is also a community of remarkable resilience. Sustainable change requires trust, compassion, and long-term commitment.

For over 25 years, Deepika Social Welfare Society has worked alongside women and children in Sonagachi, providing holistic support that empowers individuals, strengthens families, and creates opportunities for a better future.
